The EU has transferred € 5.7 million to the Syrian Ministry of Finance, to reimburse salaries of teachers who are working in schools with a high number of Iraqi refugee children, ENPI reported

A Delegation press release said this first financial transfer is part of a larger €10 million project "Emergency support to the Syrian Education Sector affected by a large influx of Iraqi refugees in Syria". "Our support to teachers working with Iraqi refugee children is part of a larger and comprehensive EU programme to assist Syria in her efforts to host Iraqi refugees," affirmed the Head of the European Union Delegation to Syria, Vassilis Bontosoglou.

Since 2007, the European Union has contributed over €60 million to help Iraqi refugees and the Syrian population hosting them in a variety of ways. The EU-funded support projects focus on education, health care, waste management and assisting victims of trafficking.
