With 15% of the ballots counted, acting Polish president Bronislaw Komorowski has a 2% lead over his closest rival in Sunday's early elections, the top election chief told journalists on Monday.

The first results show that 39.69% voted for Komorowski and 37.68%.gave their votes for Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the late Polish president Lech Kaczynski's brother. 36-year-old leader of the Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) Grzegorz Napieralski was third, with 13.94% of the vote. Other seven candidates scored less than 2%.

The turnout stood at 53.57%, National Election Commission chairman Stefan Jaworski said.

Three exit polls released late on Suday estimated the gap between Komorowski and Kaczynski to be between five and 12.5%.

"These results are predictable. Komorowski will at least keep the gap, the outcome of the runoff has already been determined," political analyst Artyom Malygin told RIA Novosti.

The MillwardBrown SMG/KRC exit poll earlier gave Komorowski a solid lead over his opponent, with 45.7% and 33.2%, respectively. Napieralski garnered 13.4%.

An exit poll by TNS OBOP said Komorowski received 40.7%, followed by Kaczynski (35.8%) and Napieralski (14%).

The third exit poll by Homo Homini said the three frontrunners received 44.5%, 34.3% and 13.5% of the vote, respectively.

The vote count continues. If no candidate gains an overall majority in the first round the two politicians will face each other in the runoff on July 4.

Komorowski became acting president after a host of senior Polish official including Lech Kaczynski died in western Russia on April 10 when the Soviet-made presidential Tu-154 crashed near the western Russian city of Smolensk.

Three constituencies, in Katowice, Plocko-Ciechanow and Krosno, also held Senate by-elections on Sunday, as their senators died in the crash.
