Pakistani clerics vow to support gov't against terrorism

Religious scholars and clerics from various schools of thought in Pakistan have vowed to support the government in busting terrorists' designs, local media reported Monday.

They also decided to observe a day against terrorism to express solidarity amongst their ranks, Xinhua reported.

According to the reports, Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik had called up the exclusive meeting of clerics in the backdrop of the triple suicide bombing on the shrine Data Darbar in Lahore, the capital of Punjab province, in which 45 people lost their lives.

The clerics of various sects agreed to maintain sectarian harmony in the country is the need of the hour.

After the meeting, Malik said the successful military operation in Malakand division, northwestern Pakistan, and the ongoing offensive in South Waziristan, Pakistan's tribal area along the Afghan border, had frustrated the terrorists, who were making last- gasp desperate attempts like the Data Darbar attack to undermine peace in Pakistan.

He said the opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif had hinted at a "control strategy" to eliminate terrorism and "I welcomed it."

"We will work with the Punjab government to do away with extremism and continue fighting until peace is restored," he added.
