The role of local authorities in the implementation of the Eastern Partnership was the focus of the discussions in the Commission for Citizenship, Governance and Institutional and External Affairs (CIVEX) of the Committee of the Regions on 1 July, ENPI reported.

A press release from the Committee said "local and regional authorities at the external frontiers of the Union are in the front line for contacts with the countries of the Eastern partnership and are consequently in a crucial position."

The press release said the European Commission and the Council of Ministers had called on the Committee of the Regions "to play an active part in the implementation of the Eastern partnership by establishing regular, tangible and concrete cooperation with local authorities in the six countries concerned."

During 2010, the Committee of the Regions will adopt opinions on the countries of the Eastern Partnership, Armenia Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. "These six opinions will demonstrate the key role that local and regional authorities play in forging closer political ties and economic integration between these countries and the EU," the press release said.
