Slovakian President Ivan Gasparovic announced Wednesday a national referendum to be held in September to let voters decide on cutting the size of parliament, DPA reported
The September referendum will concern the bid to reduce Slovakia's number of parliamentary deputies from the current 150 to 100. Also, the referendum calls for reducing the privileges of parliamentary deputies and politicians.
The plebiscite was set for September 18 following a petition campaign by the liberal Party of Freedom and Solidarity which till now had been in the opposition but is soon to be in power under a new coalition government.
Under the constitution, the president is obliged to call a referendum when at least 350,000 eligible voters have signed a petition. dpa ct dms Author: Christoph Thanei
