Two German soldiers were injured on Saturday when their vehicles were struck by roadside bombs, officials said, DPA reported.

One soldier was injured in Chardarah district of the northern province of Kunduz, Abdul Wahid Omarkhel, the district governor said.

About an hour later, another German military vehicle was hit by bomb in the same Khewaja Kafter village, injuring one more soldier, he said.

A German military source in the province confirmed the injuries and said the soldiers were taken to a military hospital.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid took responsibility for Saturday's attacks, claiming that eight German soldiers were killed in the blasts.

Afghan and US troops began an operation in Qarya Yateem area of Chardarah on Saturday, provincial police chief Mohammad Razaq Yaqoubi said. The combined forces encountered "little resistance" and there were no reports of casualties, he said.

Chardarah is the most dangerous district in Kunduz, the province which has seen more Taliban activity in the past three years than other areas in the comparatively peaceful northern region.

There are about 4,500 German troops based in northern Afghanistan. Thousands of US troops were also deployed to the region earlier this year to confront growing insurgency in the region far from Taliban's traditional power bases in the south and east.
