A Slovak regional politician was murdered in front of his house in the south of the country, his party confirmed Saturday, dpa reported.

Laszlo Basternak, 53, a member of the Nitra regional parliament and a former mayor of the southern town of Hurbanovo, was shot dead late Friday while walking his dog, the Sme daily reported on its website.

The perpetrator and the motive were not immediately known.

It was not the first time that his Hurbanovo home has been shot at. An unknown assailant tried to gun him down in early March but missed, earlier reports said.

Basternak was a member of the Party of the Hungarian Coalition, the more radical of the two parties that represent Slovakia's 500,000-strong Hungarian minority.

Party delegates honoured their colleague with a minute of silence at the start of a party congress on Saturday.

"Everyone is shocked," party spokeswoman Eva Dunajska told the German Press Agency dpa. "He was supposed to sit here today."
