Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama held talks with Indian Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao on concerns of exiled Tibetans, officials and news reports said Sunday, dpa reported.

The discussions took place at Dalai Lama's official palace in the northern hill town of Dharamsala on Saturday evening, Tenzin Taklha, a spokesman for the Tibetan leader, said.

Taklha declined to give details of the meeting, but Tibetan officials said the two sides discussed matters of "mutual interest."

The Foreign Ministry did not comment on Rao's meeting with Dalai Lama, who celebrated his 75th birthday on July 6.

But Indian media attached much significance to the talks, which followed National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon's recent visit to Beijing.

Indian officials often hold closed-door talks with the Dalai Lama but remain tight-lipped since China is sensitive on the matter.

Beijing accuses the monk of stirring tensions between India and China.

China has also objected to the activities of Tibetan exiles, but New Delhi vowed that it will not allow its territory to be used for anti-China activities.

India is home to about 100,000 Tibetan refugees who live in 35 settlements. The Dalai Lama's government-in-exile, established when he fled to India in 1959 after a failed Tibetan uprising, is not officially recognised by any country.
