The whole country of the Netherlands fell silence Sunday night following Holland's 0-1 loss to Spain in the final of the World Cup in South Africa. Hundreds of thousands orange fans in Amsterdam, who prepared to celebrate the champion, have to received the sadness one more time, Xinhua reported.

About 180,000 fans gathered hours early before the match start in Museum Square in the Dutch capital city Amsterdam, where they could watch live match in front of "the biggest video screen in Europe" -- a 88 square meters screen and other big screens.

Almost everybody was in orange, the colour of the Dutch Royalty, also the colour of the Dutch squad. The cheerying crowd turned the whole Museum Square into orange see.

But an unexpected goal of Spain in the 116th minute when Fabregas fed Iniesta who volleyed the ball into the corner with aplomb broke the Dutch dream and sent them home in silence.

"Tens of thousands of fans are now moving peacefully away from the Museum Square," a police spokesman said.

"It's a third nightmare in 2010, after 1974 and 1978," local media reported, "the orange team hoped a wonderful tournament in South Africa, but they missed the champion once again."

"Our dream is broken," a fan said.

However, there will be a tribute ceremony at Museum Square next Tuesday, but no victory cruise for the team on the historic centre's waterways like a traditional parade.
