Slovakia remains firm: No recognition of Kosovo

Slovakia said Thursday evening that it would stick by its position not to recognize Kosovo's independence despite the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling that Pristina's independence declaration move was legal, dpa reported.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Peter Stano told the German Press Agency dpa by telephone that nothing had changed in Bratislava's stance after the ICJ ruling.

Slovakia continued to adhere to UN Resolution 1244/1999 which calls for a common solution to be found by the two sides, instead of any unilateral decision, the spokesman said.

The only acceptable alternative under international law on resolving the Serbia-Kosovo dispute would be a decision by the UN Security Council, the sole body which can change a UN resolution, in Bratislava's view.

Slovakia is one of five European Union states - the others are Spain, Romania, Greece and Cyprus - which have not recognized the Kosovar independence declaration of February 2008.
