Popular American jazz singer Al Jarreau has been placed in intensive care in a hospital in southern France due to severe respiratory problems, a spokesman for the hospital in the city of Gap said, DPA reported.
"His condition is worrying," the spokesman, Maurice Marchetti, said. But he added that the 70-year-old performer's state of health was not life-threatening.
"The doctors are hoping that his condition will improve over the next few hours," Marchetti said.
Jarreau was in southern France as part of a European tour. He was to perform a concert at nearby Barcelonnette.
Jarreau, who was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has won seven Grammy awards over four consecutive decades. He is only the second artist in history - in addition to Michael Jackson - to win in three separate categories - Jazz, Pop and R&B.
