Two men appeal German prison sentences after al-Qaeda trial

Two men who were last week sentenced by a German court to several years in prison for actively supporting Islamist terrorism have appealed the ruling, a court spokesman said on Tuesday, dpa reported.

Omer O, who admitted that he had at times been a member of al- Qaeda, was given a six-year prison sentence by the court in the western city of Koblenz. His co-accused, Sermet I, was sentenced to two and a half years for assisting in terrorist activities.

Their 60-day trial had included testimony from more than 100 witnesses.

The court in the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate had sentenced the men last week, after a court case that lasted 60 days and included testimonies more than 100 witnesses.

The men, both aged 32, were accused of working with the al-Qaeda network in the restive Afghan-Pakistani border regions between 2004 and 2008.

"First of all, we need to write the verdict," a court spokesman said. This has to occur within three months.

Once the defendants receive their verdicts in writing, they have a month within which to pen a written justification for their appeal
