Fifteen people were killed in a coal mine explosion in northern China, state media reported Saturday, dpa reported.

The explosion at the Liugou coal mine in Linfen city in the northern province of Shanxi, left another 20 people injured, Xinhua reported.

The number of casualties could rise, the report said, quoting a senior official with the Yangquan Coal Industry (Group) Co Ltd, which owns the mine.

The blast occurred in a dormitory area, but its cause was not yet known.

Rescue work was still underway.

China's coal industry is a deadly business with accidents commonplace due to poor compliance with safety standards.
