Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva plans to help break the Venezuela-Colombia impasse, Presidential Spokesman Marcelo Baumbach said on Wednesday.
"President Lula is willing to help the conversations, but it is not up to Brazil to make a proposal because this matter depends on both parties' initiatives and solutions found by them," said Baumbach, Xinhua reported.
Lula will attend the inauguration ceremony of Colombian President-elect Juan Manuel Santos on Saturday, which is an indication of Brazil's willingness to strengthen its relationship with Colombia and be a communication channel between its two neighboring countries, according to Baumbach.
Lula believes South America should be free of conflicts, but he will not make any formal proposal on the issue, Baumbach added.
Lula will meet Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and sign several bilateral agreements on Friday.
The tension between Venezuela and Colombia escalated after the Colombian government accused Venezuela of harboring members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC),which made Chavez sever diplomatic relations with Colombia.
