New law will allow France to prosecute foreign genocide suspects

The French government on Tuesday unveiled a legal change that will allow the country to prosecute foreign genocide suspects living within its borders, dpa reported.

But the French judiciary can only get involved in such a case if the International Criminal Court in The Hague declines jurisdiction, the law states.

Opposition members criticized the decree's strict conditions, with Socialist Party senators arguing that it would not allow France to act efficiently enough against impunity in cases involving crimes against humanity.

The law could theoretically apply to Rwandans living in France who are suspected of involvement in their home country's 1994 genocide. dpa kol amh hl Author: Ulrike Koltermann
