The cancer has has spread to the groin and spine, according to his doctors in Sao Paulo.

Lugo, who was diagnosed last week in Paraguay before travelling to Brazil for further consultations, said Thursday that he would return to Paraguay by the weekend to resume his governing duties.

Paraguayan Health Minister Esperanza Martinez announced last week the cancer is curable.

Lugo will receive chemotherapy over the next six months. If the treatment runs smoothly, Lugo should be able to continue his political work without interruption, Martinez said.
