At least five people were killed and 50 injured when a bus fell from a 70-meter cliff in western Peru, the RPP radio station reported on Sunday.

The accident took place on a highway connecting the town of Pativilca and Huaraz as the bus driver failed to negotiate a sharp curve, RIA Novosti reported.

"The bodies of five people were recovered. Some 50 injured were taken to hospitals in the city of Barranca," a police spokesman told the radio station.

He said the death toll may rise as many of the injured are in critical condition.

Investigation, as well as search and rescue efforts are ongoing at the crash site.

Poor roads, old vehicles, and drivers who buy driving licenses on the black market are often blamed for traffic accidents which are almost routine in Peru. According to official statistics, traffic accidents claim lives of almost 4,000 people annually, about 50,000 receive injuries.

Traffic accidents also put additional strain on the country's economy, inflicting economic losses of about $1 billion annually.
