A US soldier was killed during an operation in the southern Iraqi province of Basra, the US military in Iraq said on Sunday, dpa reported.
This is the first reported death of a US soldier in Iraq since the last US combat troops left on Thursday.
The US military, which led the invasion in 2003, said they still have a 52,000-strong force in Iraq. All US troops are scheduled to leave the country by the end of 2011.
At least 4,416 US soldiers have been killed in Iraq since 2003.
