Sevilla announce sale of rebellious Squillaci to Arsenal

Spanish giants Sevilla announced on Sunday the sale of veteran defender Sebastien Squillaci to Arsenal, dpa reported.

According to Sevilla's official website, the French World Cup defender will fly to London later Sunday to undergo medical checks with the Gunners.

Media reports suggest that Arsenal will pay around 6.5 million euros (8.28 million dollars) for Squillaci, 30, which is exactly what Sevilla paid for him to Lyon in 2008.

Sevilla's website also stated that Squillaci requested not to play in the Champions League qualifying round against Sporting Braga last Wednesday, in order not to damage his chances of signing for Arsenal.

If he had played in the 1-0 defeat then he would not have been eligible to play for Arsenal in the Champions League this season.

Media reports suggested that Squillaci had an angry row with coach Antonio Alvarez on the team bus just before the Braga match because of his refusal to play.
