One person was killed and one was injured in a shootout in a village in the North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan that broke out as a result of political controversies between two groups of villagers, RIA Novosti reported.

"The incident took place late on Sunday. According to preliminary reports, the conflict between two groups of villagers was caused by a denial to register a candidate for the forthcoming elections to choose the village head," a source in the republic's interior ministry said.

He did not specify whether any arrests were made.

The source added that when the conflict was stopped by police, about 100 people, mainly women, staged a rally.

"They blocked the Kavkaz federal highway. Now officials and police are negotiating with them," the source said.
