Five members of an Islamist group were killed in a firefight with security forces in the North Caucasus Republic of Dagestan in Russia, the Interior Ministry in the republic's capital Makhachkala said Wednesday, DPA reported.
The men opened fire Tuesday from inside their car at a road checkpoint, the Itar-Tass new agency said. Police and soldiers shot and killed the attackers.
Clashes between Islamist and pro-Kremlin forces are frequent in mainly Muslim Dagestan and neighbouring Ingushetia.
