A bomb killed an district governor in eastern Afghanistan and injured four others Monday morning, a government spokesman said.

The bomb has been put in the vehicle of Sayed Mohammed Pahlawan, district governor for Lal Poor in the eastern province of Nangarhar, the provincial governor's spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdul Zai told the German Press Agency dpa.

"The district governor was killed and his four bodyguards were injured in the blast," he said.

An investigation has been launched.

Government officials have been targets of Taliban insurgents in southern and eastern Afghanistan.

The Taliban have carried out a campaign of assassination and intimidation against tribal leaders and politicians who back the government and coalition forces in Kandahar.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the blast.
