US: There will be attempts to disrupt Israeli-Palestinian peace process

As the Israelis and Palestinians get ready for their first direct peace negotiations this week after nearly two years, the US said Tuesday that there will be some attempts to disrupt or derail the process, dpa reported.

Asked about the shooting of four Israelis Tuesday evening near the Kiryat Arba settlement in the West Bank, State Department spokesman PJ Crowley said the US was aware that "there are those who will do whatever they can to disrupt or derail the process."

He said, "We are cognizant that there could be ... external events that can ... have an impact on the environment. We also are cognizant that there may well be actors in the region who are deliberately ... making these kinds of attacks in order to try to sabotage the process."

Asked whether the US condemned Tuesday's killings, Crowley responded cautiously: "Anytime ... one human being takes out a weapon and fires and kills other human beings, it's a tragedy."

The attack came ahead of face-to-face talks set to open Thursday in Washington between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

It took place as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was en route to Washington and while Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was meeting with US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who will open Thursday's talks.
