Lady Gaga hopes to cement stardom at MTV Video Music Awards

Lady Gaga's unique musical style, provocative clothing (or lack of it) and controversial antics have already made her one of the pop world's biggest stars, dpa reported.

But the 24-year-old singer is hoping to seal her place in history on Sunday night at the MTV Video Music Awards, where she is aiming to turn her record 13 nominations into a record number of wins.

Some of her colleagues are planning to spoil her party in a show, which may not have the prestige of the Grammy Awards, but is probably the biggest single spectacle in the pop music world.

Eminem may no longer be the bad white boy of rap, but he's still hoping to upset Lady Gaga with his eight nominations for the coveted awards. MTV's producers of the three-hour spectacle also seemed to lean in Eminem's direction, awarding him the honour of opening the show after he garnered the support of 56 per cent of voters in an online poll.

"Eminem is opening the show, and the theme of his performance is 'triumph,'" VMA executive producer Dave Sirulnick told MTV News. "It's a testament to the year he's had, his return to the top. He tells a story, and the viewers will definitely pick up on that."

The show will be hosted by saucy late night comedienne Chelsea Handler. Other stars that are scheduled to perform at the 2010 MTV VMA's include Kanye West, Linkin Park, Mary J Blige, Drake, Usher, Paramore, Justin Bieber, B.o.B, and Florence and the Machine.

Lady Gaga's nominations include awards for Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and the biggest prize of all Video of the Year, in which her song Bad Romance will compete with Eminem (Not Afraid), Florence and the Machine (Dog Days Are Over), 30 Seconds to Mars (Kings and Queens), BOB with Hayley Williams (Airplanes) and her own collaboration with Beyonce (Telephone).

Beyonce won last year's top prize for her song Single Ladies.

Teenage sensation Justin Bieber is the hot favourite to win the Best New Artist category. Other nominees include Jason Derulo, Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj and Broken Bells.
