Police have arrested a 13-year-old boy for allegedly raping a 5-year-old girl on a mixed-sex children's ward in a Hong Kong public hospital, news reports said Saturday.

The teenager and the girl were both in hospital for examinations as suspected victims in separate child abuse cases when the alleged offence took place, according to the South China Morning Post.

The 13-year-old was arrested after the girl told her mother what had happened, the newspaper said. The boy was charged with indecent assault because he was too young to be charged with rape, dpa reported.

He was released on bail and is expected to face trial in a juvenile court, according to the Post.

In a separate report, government-run radio station RTHK said the offence took place on September 26 at Hong Kong's Eastern Hospital.

Children up to the age of 18 are treated on mixed-sex children's wards in Hong Kong public hospitals.
