A shoot-out between two rival gangs in northern Mexico has left 14 people dead, officials said Saturday, dpa reported.

The shootout occurred Friday in the village of Jose de la Cruz in Durango state and was likely part of a power struggle among drug cartels, officials said.

The cartels have fought for years over control of the lucrative drug routes from South America to the United States. Some 30,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico since 2006.
