Islam also belongs in Germany, president says on unity day

The religion of Islam is a part of German society alongside the traditional faiths of Christianity and Judaism, German President Christian Wulff said Sunday in an address to mark the 20th anniversary of reunification, DPA reported.

"Christianity belongs in Germany. Judaism belongs in Germany. And by now, Islam also belongs in Germany," Wulff said.

The head of state also addressed in his speech debates on migration and integration which have raised much controversy in recent months.

"Let us not push toward a false confrontation," the president said, urging all faiths and ethnicities to live together without "daydreaming or fear."
