Unidentified gunmen on Monday shot dead a regional trial court judge in the northern Philippines, a provincial police chief said, dpa reported.

Judge Reynaldo Lacasandile was waiting for a bus in Tagudin town in Ilocos Sur province, 270 kilometres north of Manila, when two suspects fired at him.

Senior Superintendent Eduardo Dopale said the 48-year-old victim suffered two gunshot wounds to the chest and died while being rushed to a nearby hospital.

"The judge was on his way to his office in nearby Vigan City when he was attacked," he said.

Dopale said investigators were still determining if the attack was related to victim's work as a judge.
