Thirteen people were killed Tuesday in Nepal when a jeep carrying pilgrims plunged into a river, authorities said.

Thirteen people were killed Tuesday in Nepal when a jeep carrying pilgrims plunged into a river, authorities said.

Three others were injured when the jeep plunged into the Kaligandaki River in Myagdi district in the north-west of the country. The pilgrims were travelling to Muktinath temple in the northern part of the district, DPA reported.

It was not clear how many people were in the vehicle and the number of those killed is expected to rise, according to local authorities.

Three survivors were rescued.
