The death toll from devastating floods in central Vietnam in recent days has jumped to 49, as 34,000 people have been displaced, disaster officials said, Press TV reported.

The death toll from devastating floods in central Vietnam in recent days has jumped to 49, as 34,000 people have been displaced, disaster officials said, Press TV reported.

33 people have been killed in Quang Binh province which was hardest hit by the floods.

Nguyen Truong Giang of the province's flood and storm control department said that 14 people are still missing in the province.

The 16 other deaths came in Ha Tinh, Nghe An and Quang Tri provinces, the national storm department said.

The army has been using boats and helicopters to move people to safety and deliver food to the affected area.

Thousands of hectares of rice fields have been flooded, causing fears of food shortage.

Water levels on rivers have began to drop in Quang Binh province while rivers from Quang Tri to Thua Thien-Hue provinces were continuing to rise, said the national meteorology centre.
