Chinese Premier Wen in Turkey to boost bilateral ties

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao is holding meetings with Turkish leaders on Friday as part of an official two-day visit aimed at strengthening ties, DPA reported.

Turkey is the last stop of Wen's European tour, which has also taken him to Greece, Belgium and Italy.

The Chinese leader is expected to meet with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Abdullah Gul, who visited China in June.

From Ankara, Wen is scheduled to travel to Istanbul, where he will meet with Turkish business leaders.

The two countries are expected to sign a series of bilateral trade and cooperation agreements.

Trade between Turkey and China stood at 14.2 billion dollars last year, although a large portion of it consisted of Chinese exports to Turkey.

The two countries, though, appear keen on expanding ties, particularly in terms of trade and defence cooperation. Turkey and China recently held joint aerial exercises. Ankara has explored the possibility of purchasing Chinese missiles.

For NATO member and European Union-candidate Turkey, forging closer ties with China could prove problematic. In recent years, Ankara has been facing increasing questions about its perceived shift to the east, while its improving ties with Tehran and its objection to sanctions over Iran's nuclear programme have put the Turkish government at odds with several of its Western allies.

Relations between Turkey and China have not been without problems. After ethnic riots last year's in China's Xinjiang province left many Turkic-origin Uighurs dead, Erdogan referred to the violence as a "genocide."

In response, Chinese media outlets called on Erdogan to "take his words back."
