UN Security Council concerned by violence, wraps up Sudan visit

A United Nations Security Council delegation on Friday wrapped up a visit to Sudan following a trip to the troubled Darfur region where it found that violence has continued among the warring parties, DPA reported.

The council spent two days in El Fasher, in northern Darfur, where the UN and African Union maintain headquarters for a joint peacekeeping operation to try and restore peace in the region and secure conditions for humanitarian assistance to Darfurians. The delegation flew to Khartoum before returning to New York on Saturday.

British Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant said at a news conference in El Fasher that the council members were concerned by the continued violence and fully backed the work of the UN mission in Darfur.

The Khartoum government has been fighting with African rebel groups since 2003 despite signed peace accords. More than 300,000 people have died in the war in Darfur and over 2 million people have become refugees.

The delegation was in Kampala, Uganda, earlier this week before visiting Southern Sudan and Darfur.
