George Michael leaves prison after serving half his sentence

British pop singer George Michael was freed from jail Monday after serving a prison term for driving under the influence of drugs, dpa reported.

The singer and former Wham! star was sentenced to eight weeks on September 14, of which the last four were suspended for good behaviour. He was also banned from driving for five years.

It was "fantastic" to be free, the 47-year-old told journalists as he walked out of Highpoint Prison in Suffolk, eastern England.

"I just want to say thank you for everybody who has supported me in there, it's quite inspirational," he said.

Michael was arrested after he crashed his vehicle into a photo shop in London on July 4 while under the influence of cannabis
