An Australian has been arrested in India and charged with soliciting a bribe for awarding a US-funded contract to an Afghan building contractor, dpa reported.

The Australian Foreign Affairs Department said in a statement Friday it was seeking consular access to the man but would not confirm his identity.

The US Justice Department has named him as Neil Campbell, 60, who supervised construction contracts for building schools and hospitals in Afghanistan.

Campbell worked for the International Organization for Migration, a UN body that receives US funding.

He was taken into custody by Indian authorities Wednesday when he arrived at New Delhi airport. The US is seeking his extradition.
