A 67-year-old man training to be a helicopter pilot died with his instructor when their aircraft crashed off the south coast of New Zealand, authorities said on Friday, dpa reported.

The helicopter, which was reported overdue on Thursday, was found sunk in Bluff Harbour after an extensive land, sea and air search.

A spokesman for the Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) said the body of the pilot was found inside the aircraft and the other body was found nearby.

Allan Munro, a farmer who had been a fixed wing pilot for 25 years, was a week away from sitting for his helicopter pilot's licence, his wife, Glennis, told the Southland Times.

His instructor was named as Jason Wright, 29, chief executive of Stewart Island Helicopters.
