Italy: Police arrest 15 mafia suspects near Naples

Police on Friday arrested 25 people suspected of links to the Naples mafia. The suspects were arrested in the town of Torre Anunziata, southeast of Naples. They face charges including mafia association, usury, extortion, money laundering, drug trafficking, fraud and unlicensed betting, AKI reported.

The arrests followed a two-year investigation of the Naples mafia or Camorra. The probe aimed to trace the hierarchies of the various crime families and their sources of revenue, especially usury, extortion, betting shops and betting websites.

Police on Wednesday in the Campania region surrounding Naples arrested an aide of jailed Naples mafia boss Nicola Schiavone. Francesco Barbato was seized at a friend's house in the Naples mafia stronghold of Castelvolturno after several months on the run.

Castelvolturno, northwest of Naples, was the scene of the brutal murders of six African immigrants by suspected mafia gunmen in a drive-by shooting in September, 2008.
