Australia's Casey Stoner led from start to finish Sunday to claim his fourth consecutive home MotoGP at Melbourne's Phillip Island circuit, dpa reported.

The 25-year-old Ducati rider, who set the fastest lap in the warm up and started on pole, was never challenged on what is likely to be his final ride in his home country for the Italian manufacturer.

Newly crowned world champion Spain's Jorge Lorenzo brought his Yamaha in a distant second.

The only skirmish of the race, run in sunny conditions, was won by Italian Valentino Rossi against American Nicky Hayden.

Hayden, aboard a Ducati, came in fourth behind the Yamaha-mounted seven-time world champion.

Rossi and Hayden will both be on Ducatis next season.

The race was without Suzuki's Loris Capirossi, who pulled out before the start after suffering a groin injury in Saturday's qualifying round.

The Italian veteran is returning to Europe, hoping to be fit for the Portuguese Grand Prix in two weeks.

Honda's Dani Pedrosa, who struggled in qualifying after returning from a broken collarbone, was also a non-starter.
