An US-made F16 fighter jet crashed in northern Thailand Monday, killing the pilot, the Royal Thai Air Force said.

"This is the first F16 crash we've ever had," Air Vice Marshal Monton Sanchukorn said, DPA reported.

The jet was flying with three other fighters from Nakhon Sawan province to Chiang Mai when it crashed around 10 am (0300 GMT), about 350 kilometres north of Bangkok, Monton said.

Pilot Flight Lieutenant Thanikorn Luengrungwalee died in the crash.

"We are investigating the cause of the accident," Monton said, who noted that there was poor visibility Monday morning because of bad weather.

The F16 is the main fighter plane in the Royal Thai Air Force, which has more than 30 of the aircraft.
