Two militants were killed on Wednesday in a special operation in the Russian North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, the head of the republic of Chechnya said, RIA Novosti reported.

"The militants were residents of the village of Benoi in Chechnya's Nozhai-Yurt district," Ramzan Kadyrov said, adding that their identities had been established.

"They were surrounded by special service officers. When they were told to surrender they opened fire and were killed by return fire," he told journalists.

There were no casualties among law enforcement officers, the Russian National Antiterrorism Committee said.

Terrorist attacks and shootouts with police are common in Russia's troubled North Caucasus republics, especially in Dagestan and neighboring Chechnya and Ingushetia.

The incident comes the day after militants launched a deadly raid on the Chechen parliament.
