Was it the contents of his iPod, the forthcoming election or innovative ways to kick-start America's stuttering economy?

That was the speculation Friday about a surprise meeting Thursday night between US president Barack Obama and Steve Jobs, the tech mogul who founded Apple and turned it into the second most valuable company in the US, dpa reported.

Obama met Jobs for some 45 minutes while on a campaign and fundraising swing through Seattle and San Francisco.

"They discussed American competitiveness and education, especially reforms such as the President's Race to the Top initiative," said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs. "They then talked about energy independence and ways to increase job creation."

But tech analyst Gene Munster said Obama may also have consulted master marketer Jobs on the upcoming elections in which his Democratic party is facing a voter revolt over the state of the economy.

Later, Obama held three fundraisers including one at the home of Google executive Marissa Mayer, who hosted a 30,400-dollar-per-plate fundraising dinner.

"My task has also been to try to figure out how do we address some of the structural problems in the economy that have prevented more Googles from being created, prevented more Hewlett-Packards from being created ... how do we unleash this incredible energy and dynamism that we know has always driven America, decade after decade," Obama said.
