Pentagon deplores WikiLeaks for leaking documents

The Pentagon on Friday sharply criticized WikiLeaks, the self-described whistleblower website, for leaking hundreds of thousands of classified US military document related to the war in Iraq, dpa reported.

The Pentagon accused WikiLeaks of putting the lives of US troops and partners at risk because the information could by used by insurgents to plot attacks on US troops. The documents number more than 390,000.

"We deplore WikiLeaks for inducing individuals to break the law, leak classified documents and then cavalierly share that secret information with the world, including our enemies," said Major Chris Perrine, a Pentagon spokesman.

WikiLeaks in July publicized more than 90,000 documents related to the war in Afghanistan.

"We know terrorist organizations have been mining the leaked Afghan documents for information to use against us and this Iraq leak is more than four times as large," he said.

"By disclosing such sensitive information, Wikileaks continues to put at risk the lives of our troops, their coalition partners and those Iraqis and Afghans working with us," Perrine said.

He added that WikiLeaks should return the "stolen material" and "expunge it from their websites as soon as possible."
