US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will make a tour of the Asia-Pacific region next week, including her first official visit to Australia, the Foreign Affairs Department said Saturday, DPA reported.

Clinton will joint US Defense Secretary Robert Gates in attending a ministerial meeting in Melbourne, it said.

"We look forward to hosting Secretary Clinton and Secretary Gates, two of the highest ranking members of President Obama's Cabinet," Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd said.

"Their visit will mark ... 70 years of diplomatic relations between Australia and the United States."

Clinton's October 27-November 8 trip would take in Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and Australia.

It kicks off with talks in Hawaii with Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara, after which she will travel to Hanoi, for her second visit to Vietnam in less than four months.

Clinton will attending the East Asia Summit, and then visit Cambodia before going on to Malaysia on November 1.

She also plans talks with Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Michael Somare in Port Moresby.

In Australia, Clinton will meet Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who replaced Rudd in June and won a parliamentary election in September.
