Four blasts rocked Herat city, capital of Herat province in west Afghanistan on Saturday, and a UN office came under attack.

"Armed militants attacked the office of United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in Herat city," a security official told Xinhua but declined to be identified.

He also added that the attackers could be suicide bombers.

So far, four blasts have shocked the city.

One of the blasts occurred outside the gate of UNAMA office, enabling the attackers to enter the compound, he said.

Security forces have cordoned off the area and do not allow journalists to get access.

Sporadic firings are still continuing, as security forces are fighting the attackers inside the compound, he said.

Meantime, a spokesman of UNAMA office in Kabul Nazifullah Salarzai in talks with Xinhua confirmed the attack and said details would be released to media later after investigation.

Meantime, a Taliban spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmadi in talks with media via telephone from undisclosed locations claimed responsibility for the blasts, saying the clash is going on inside the UNAMA compound, which inflicted casualties on employees.

He did not provide more details. Meantime, an eyewitness said that three suicide attackers have been killed. Police officials have yet to make comment.
