Hurricane Richard makes landfall in Belize Eds: Starts new cycle

Hurricane Richard made landfall in Belize in Central America late Sunday, the US National Hurricane Centre (NHC) in Miami said, with winds of 150 km/hr, dpa reported.

Richard, a category-1 hurricane on the five-point Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale, made landfall about 50 km west-southwest of Belize City.

The centre of the hurricane was forecast to move across the centre of Belize overnight and into northern Guatemala early Monday. It is expected to cross southeastern Mexico and into the southern Gulf of Mexico late Monday or early Tuesday.

Richard is expected to weaken as it moves further inland, the NHC said.

Along with hurricane force winds, Richard is expected to dump large amounts of rain on Belize, northern Guatemala and the Mexican states of Quintana Roo and Campeche, which could produce life- threatening flash floods and mud slides.

Richard formed last weekend over the Caribbean and became a tropical storm late Wednesday.
