A major rescue operation was under way off the south-west coast of Britain Wednesday where a fishing vessel is on fire, coastguards said, DPA reported.

The Athena, with 111 crew on board, caught fire in heavy gales in the Irish Sea, off the Isles of Scilly, coastguards in Falmouth, Cornwall, said.

A sea and air rescue operation had been launched and 81 people were in life-rafts, with 30 crew remaining on the ship to fight the fire, a coastguard spokesman said.

The 105-metre-long Athena, which is registered in the Faroe Islands, was built in 1992. It has a maximum capacity of 123 crew and is managed by shipping company Thor.
