Russian Airborne Forces commander hospitalized after traffic accident (UPDATE-2)

Lieutenant-General Vladimir Shamanov, the commander of the Russian Airborne Forces, got into a serious accident. He was injured and hospitalized. Acting commander of the Tula Airborne formation Colonel Alexei Naumetz was with him. Now he is in intensive care, a representative from the information department of the Defense Ministry told RIA Novosti.

Lieutenant-General Vladimir Shamanov, the commander of the Russian Airborne Forces, got into a serious accident. He was injured and hospitalized. Acting commander of the Tula Airborne formation Colonel Alexei Naumetz was with him. Now he is in intensive care, a representative from the information department of the Defense Ministry told RIA Novosti.

The accident took place on Saturday morning in Zarechensky district of the Tula region, on the 1-kilometer of Moscow highway. The driver of official BMW died at the scene, Shamanov and Naumetz were taken to local hospitals.

"Shamanov will be transported to the Burdenko hospital in Moscow soon according to the Russian Defense Minister's order," a message said.

He said that a MAZ car drove into the oncoming lane and collided with an official BMW car at 9.40. Shamanov and Naumetz were in BMW car.

"As a result of the accident, Shamanov was injured. But his life is out of danger," a representative of the Defense Ministry said.

He noted that according to the traffic police, the MAZ driver roughly violated the traffic.
