Three soldiers were killed when communist rebels ambushed a security patrol in the northern Philippines, a military report said Sunday.

Three other soldiers were wounded Saturday when the guerrillas shot at their vehicle on a remote road in Baay-Licuan town in Abra province, 245 kilometres north of Manila, according to the report.

The rebels took several rifles from the dead and wounded soldiers, dpa reported.

Communist rebels have been fighting the government since the late 1960s, making the movement one of the longest-running leftist insurgencies in Asia.
