A NATO soldier was killed in an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday while elsewhere three civilians were injured in a suicide bombing, officials said, DPA reported.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Forces soldier was killed by a homemade bomb, the military alliance said, without revealing the deceased's nationality or the exact location of the incident.

In another attack, a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest in a busy town in the northern province of Takhar, the provincial police chief said.

The suicide bomber struck in the market of Khoja Bahawodin, a district in northern Takhar, police chief Shah Jahan Noori said.

Three people including a woman and a child were injured in the blast, he said, adding the target was a nearby police checkpoint.

Taliban insurgents fighting Afghan and NATO-led forces have intensified their activities this year. They have relied heavily on the use of suicide and roadside bombings in their nine-year insurgency.
