The head of the German Bishops' Conference expressed shock Monday at Christmas Eve attacks on Christian communities that the African Union said left 38 people dead in central Nigeria, dpa reported.

"Every time I look at the pictures, I ask myself how this blind fanaticism and exorbitant propensity to violence can be possible," Archbishop Robert Zollitsch wrote to Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama in the Nigerian city of Jos.

Several bombs exploded in and around the city of Jos, and dozens of raiders attacked a church in the town of Maiduguri in a region that has sees repeated flare-ups of violence between Muslim and Christian communities.

Last year Zollitsch visited Jos, where he took part with Kaigama in the wake for the city's deceased imam, Alhaji Inuwa Ali.

"The Muslim leaders ensured us of their absolute readiness for peace," Zollitsch stressed in his letter, in which he demanded mutual respect, irrespective of religious affiliation.
