UN chief Ban reaches out to to Ivory Coast's Ouattara

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon telephoned the winner of Ivory Coast's presidential election to offer his support for his government, dpa reported.

The United Nations said Saturday evening that Ban called Alassane Quattara, who has been declared the winner of the November 28 election. Incumbent Laurent Gbagbo has refused to accept the outcome or leave office.

Quattara has had himself sworn in as president and is recognized as the victor by the United Nations, European Union and United States.

The crisis has sparked violent unrest in the West African country that has left dozens dead.
